EXAMPLE:
6" Sch 40 has an outside diameter of 6.625" +/- 0.011", and it has an ovality tolerance of 0.070". This means that the diameter, if perfectly round, could be between 6.614" and 6.636", which is the +/- 0.011". This pipe at any diameter in this range could be pushed down so that it is oval shaped. The biggest diameter that you could measure minus the smallest diameter that you could measure could be up to 0.070" difference.
In the diagram to the left, the top pipe is shown at a perfectly round 6.625". The lower pipe is shown at its maximum ovality tolerance of 0.070". Measuring horizontally, the pipe is 0.035" greater than the perfectly round pipe. Vertically, the pipe measures 0.035" less than the perfectly round pipe.
